Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

About the Gastric Banding Procedure

Did you know that gastric banding surgery is one of the safest surgical options for treating obesity?

More of what you want to know.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery is one of the safest surgical options available and, on average, helps clients to attain 60% weight loss over a 2-3 year period. At the Credit Valley Clinic, our highly-trained surgeons perform gastric banding on an outpatient basis, meaning you do not have to be admitted into the hospital in order to benefit from this surgery.

You’ll first need to find out if Gastric banding is performed laparoscopically.  This is a much less invasive technique with reduced pain, and faster recovery. How does it work? for gastric banding. Here is a list of things to know about the procedure:

  • You will be given a general anesthesia at the start of the operation.
  • The surgical incisions you’ll experience are much smaller and much less traumatic than a typical surgical incision.
  • A tiny camera inserted into the abdomen is fed through one of the incisions. It projects an image onto a TV screen which guides the doctors through the surgery.
  • Next, the surgeons will fasten the band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small gastric pouch. (The band is usually left empty or only partially filled for the first 4 to 6 weeks.)
  • An access port will also be inserted under the skin. This is used to adjust the band later.
  • The surgery takes around 60-90 minutes and you will be carefully monitored in the recovery area for another 2-3 hours before being discharged.
  • After the gastric banding procedure, you may feel some pain once the anesthesia has worn off. However, this can usually be relieved with ordinary pain medications.
  • Our trained staff will help you get out of bed and moving as soon as you’re ready in order to prevent complications.
  • Most patients can go home the day of their surgery.
  • You should be able to resume your normal activities within a few weeks after the surgery.
  • Most individuals can return to work in approximately 1 week post their surgery.
